1. Officer Positions Within a Club
If you are interested in joining a club, but not entirely sure which one to sign up for, fear not! In this section, I will give a brief overview of the various positions within a club and what responsibilities they entail.
I know this might seem fairly rudimentary, but I think it is important to know what officer positions make up a board for a club. Even though every club may vary in the number of positions available, there are a few staples to a board of officers that generally stay the same.
Secretary:
The secretary of the club is generally a minute-keeper for important meetings and informational sessions relating to the club. When I say “minute-keepers,” it can, quite possibly, mean keeping record of how long a meeting goes on. In addition, they are responsible for meticulously taking notes on what is being said during the meetings and organizing it in a way that is easy to digest.
Treasurer:
Treasurers are responsible for keeping track of the club’s finances. They are in charge of the knowing the amount of money that is needed for events to take place and for keeping a record of what has been spent. They may also be responsible for drafting messages to request money from organizations on campus, which is also in line with completing grant application forms.
Publicist:
The publicist is responsible for maintaining the social presence of the club, online and in person. In many cases, publicists are the ones designing the flyers for events and posting them on the club’s various social media platforms to promote events. Publicists use an array of creative programs that can range from Instagram, Discord, Mailchimp, and Google Docs.
President:
The presidency can generally be made up of a president and vice president, or two co-presidents. In either case, these two positions are responsible for leading and organizing events for the club. Although, the manner in which the club is conducted is usually up to the presidents, they are responsible for conducting club meetings to discuss the planning of events with the board. Responsibilities can include public speaking, constant networking and reaching out, submitting forms to request spaces for events, and delegating responsibilities amongst the officers.
